Stay Dry

Perspiration (also known as sweating) is a common condition with our coming season- summer. Perspiration is an internal fluid (mainly water and salt) excreting through your skin to help cool the body. It usually occurs while sitting in the sun, during or after exercise and when feelings of nervousness or anxiety take place.

Most common causes for perspiration:

  • Heredity - Some people inherit a tendency of excessive sweating, especially on the palms or soles of their feet.
  • Diet - Drinking hot beverages and especially those with caffeine or alcohol. Eating spicy foods can have a sweating affect too.
  • Menopause - Women experiencing hot flashes: a rise in temperature accompanied by sweating and a feeling of intense heat (due to drop in estrogen levels).
  • Low levels of male hormones - Men with low levels of testosterone or a condition known as hypogonadism (caused by reduced functioning of the testicles) can also experience hot flashes
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) - Occurs in people who have diabetes. Common symptoms include sweating, shakiness, weakness, hunger, dizziness and nausea.
  • Fevers - Occurs when a person's body temperature rises above its normal range. In reaction to this, people have a tendency to sweat excessively in order to help cool the body down at a quicker rate.
Treatments
There are a variety of solutions available to you to help reduce perspiration. You may choose antiperspirants or medical treatments, but the best way is through self care:

Self Care:
  • Bathe daily - Helps keep the amount of bacteria on your skin to a minimum. Bacteria on your skin causes a malodorous scent when mixed with perspiration.
  • Dry your body thoroughly after you bathe - Bacteria thrive on damp spaces.
  • Wear proper foot wear - Shoes made of natural material (leather) help feet breathe more easily. Wearing socks made of cotton or wool and pantyhose with cotton soles will help keep your feet dry by absorbing any moisture.
  • Choose natural fiber clothing - Wear natural fabrics such as cotton, wool and silk, which all allow your skin to breath. When exercising wear high tech fabrics that keep moisture away from the skin's surface.
  • Relaxation techniques - If stress is a factor, try yoga or meditation; it may help you to control your stress level, therefore lowering perspiration.
  • Air your feet - Go barefoot when you can, or at least slip out of your shoes from time to time. This allows your feet breathing time, helps keep them dry and helps cool the entire body.
